In its 14th year now, the 2020 edition of Art Dubai will showcase 19 leading modernist artists from 11 countries in the MENASA (Middle East, North Africa and South Asia) region making it one of the largest art repositories. Curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath of Art Reoriented, a multidisciplinary curatorial platform, the upcoming edition will highlight a number of diverse artistic practices focusing on modernism ranging from the 1930s until the 1970s. “Art Dubai Modern is a discursive platform that will open up the multiple facets of modernism,” say the curators in a joint statement.India at Art Dubai 2020Three significant modernist positions from India will be represented through the politically charged works of Anjolie Ela Menon (b. 1940/Aicon Art, New York), MF Husain (1913-2011/Eye for Art, Houston) and Rabin Mondal (1929-2019/DAG, Delhi, Mumbai and New York). Menon’s role as an artist and feminist will feature a number of her seminal 1970s portrait paintings. The highly regarded Husain will be in the modern section with rare works from the 1950s and 1960s highlighting the innovative aspects of his approach to figuration. Mondal invented a language in paint that expresses his engagement with social injustice, and will be presented through seminal paintings from the 1960s and 1970s.
