This section presents the artworks created by Abed Abdi between 1960 and 1964 — a formative period in Haifa before his academic studies in East Germany. During these years, Abdi refined his artistic voice while attending art lessons and working independently in his hometown.
In 1962, he held his first solo exhibition, marking a significant milestone in the local Palestinian art scene. These works reflect a deep connection to the daily realities of Haifa’s Arab community, and an emerging visual language shaped by observation, identity, and social commentary. It serves as a foundation for understanding the transition into his academically influenced artworks developed from 1965 onward.
During that period of the 1960s, I drew my creative inspiration from the circumstances and situations that arose after the catastrophe, and from the transformations that our lives witnessed. It was a time laden with challenges and changes, and I was in the process of embodying these complex emotions and experiences. One of the means I used to express these feelings and visions was art. As a young person striving to change his disillusioned world, I found in art a powerful medium of expression.
