Abed Abdi boasts a large body of work comprising graphics, drawings, sculptures, and paintings. Arriving to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from Haifa in 1964 by way of the Communist Youth Alliance, Abdi studied graphic arts and mural-making at Dresden’s Academy of Fine Arts under Lea Grundig at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (HfBK), between 1964 and 1971. Departing from his time at the HfBK, this conversation with the artist offers insight into the many aesthetic and pedagogical encounters that have given shape to his practice during and beyond the GDR’s histories of migration and exchange.
