A Fragile Shelter depicts a mother holding her three children inside a refugee tent surrounded by the devastation of Gaza.
The tent offers only a fragile barrier against the destruction outside. Yet, within it, the mother’s embrace becomes a different kind of shelter. Her gesture expresses protection, fear, and the instinctive determination to keep her children safe.
The painting focuses on the human experience of displacement rather than on the destruction itself. Instead, Abed Abdi places the family at the center of the composition, allowing their presence to speak for the countless families forced to seek safety during war.
At the same time, the contrast between the vulnerability of the tent and the mother’s protective embrace gives the work its emotional tension.
Throughout his career, Abed Abdi has explored displacement, conflict, memory, and the human consequences of political violence. In this work, these themes take an intimate form through the relationship between a mother and her children.
The painting becomes not only an image of Gaza, but also a reflection on the universal human need for shelter, safety, and family.
