The Shrine of Sheikh Mujahid in Tarshiha is a limited edition fine art print from Abed Abdi’s Holy Sites in the Holy Land series.

The artwork depicts a historic shrine located on the mountain overlooking the village of Tarshiha in the Upper Galilee. For generations, the site has remained a place of devotion, remembrance, and cultural connection.

Visitors from the surrounding area continue to visit the shrine, light candles, and make vows. Moreover, the site has attracted people from different religious communities, reflecting the shared traditions that exist within the landscape.

The Legend of Sheikh Mujahid

According to local tradition, the shrine belongs to Sheikh Mujahid Jamal Al-Din, also known as Sheikh Jamal Al-Din or “Sheikha.”

The legend tells that he was a commander in the early Islamic forces and received the title of a “mujahid” — a figure associated with struggle and devotion. During a battle near the village, he was killed, and the story says that his head flew through the air. The phrase “Tara Sheikha” (“Sheikha flew”) is traditionally connected to the origin of the name Tarshiha.

Whether understood as history or legend, the story remains part of the cultural memory of the place.

Landscape, Faith, and Identity

In Abed Abdi’s interpretation, the shrine becomes more than an architectural subject. Instead, it becomes a symbol of continuity and belonging.

The work reflects the artist’s long-standing interest in the relationship between people, landscapes, and collective memory. Through this image, a local sacred site becomes part of a wider visual archive of the Holy Land.

مزار مشهور على قمة الجبل الذي تنتشر القرية على سفحه للشيخ مجاهد جمال الدين ، ولا يزال أهل المنطقة يترددون على المزار وينذرون عنده ، وتضاء له الشموع ،ويشترك في الزيارة بعض مسيحيي المنطقة ،وتدور حول صاحب المقام أسطورة قديمة مفادها أن المجاهد جمال الدين و اسمه ” شيحا ” أو شيحا جمال الدين ، كان قائداً في القوات الإسلامية ولقب بشيخ مجاهد ، وقطع رأسه في المعركة التي جرت قرب مكان القرية فطار ، فقيل طار شيحا ، وحرف مع الوقت إلى ترشيحا
